Three kidnap victims freed in Basilan

Three people who have been abducted in Basilan were released unharmed over the weekend in Al-Barka town, police confirmed Monday.

Kidnap victims Wilma Sumergido, son Michael Sumergido and Ronillo Ando were freed on Saturday 10:30 a.m. in Barangay Magcawa following negotiations between their captors and village officials. The three were fetched by policemen in Al-Barka following their release.

It was not yet clear, however, if ransom was paid.

The victims were kidnapped on July 20 in Lamitan town. They are currently staying at the headquarters of Marine Battalion Landing Team 7 for debriefing.

The abduction was one of the recent incidents of kidnapping in Basilan. Reports said bandit group Abu Sayyaf and a Moro Islamic Liberation Front lost command in the province are being blamed in the series of kidnappings. David Santos, ABS-CBN Zamboanga
